TrainingBriefs® Culture Add - Avoiding Assumptions & Generalizations

5 Minutes Level: Foundational

Making assumptions about someone based solely on a single trait, like their name, can be harmful. Each of us wants to be recognized as a complete individual, and a name is only one small part of our identity. These kinds of over-generalizations are often subtle but still impactful. When we allow a name to influence decisions like hiring, we fall into the trap of stereotyping. Rather than focusing on "culture fit," we should consider "culture add" - the unique value and perspective a person can contribute to the team.

Description

Building an inclusive workplace (both for current team members and future hires) starts with fostering a genuine sense of belonging. Here are a few meaningful actions we can take:

  • Offer help when someone struggles to pronounce a name correctly by guiding them on how to say it.
  • Take time to learn about the name so you can provide context if others make negative remarks.
  • Highlight the uniqueness of different names in a positive way.
  • Encourage and support accurate pronunciation of every employee’s name, while also being mindful of any assumptions or stereotypes that might arise from it.
